Such a leak would come in under the carpet and soak it while keeping the floor mat dry.
A c drains are typically on the passenger side.
The problem is that it takes a long time to soak through to footwell so it may have been happening long before you spotted it and it may have stopped happening but is taking a long time to dry out.
